Before You Jump In…
Just two things you’ll need to have set up before you start. But don’t let that stop you from checking it out.
- You must be active as a Dental Assistant I or II (or the equivalent in your state — we explain the specifics below), AND
- You must have current, hands-on BLS certification from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Online CPR alone does NOT meet this requirement for any state this course is offered in.
What’s Involved Varies by Location
Here’s where we’ll spare you the hype: this course doesn’t unlock the exact same privileges in every state, because not every state dental board values a Nitrous Monitoring certificate the same way. Please read this before you enroll.
In North Carolina and New Hampshire, it’s the complete pathway. Complete the course, pass the final exam, print your certificate and hand it to your supervising dentist. You’re ready to monitor. No application, no waiting period, no board exam.
South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Dakota have pathways that involve this course as one piece of becoming Nitrous certified. Some of these states require you to already have one state-specific credential (South Carolina wants you to be EDDA eligible, Tennessee and North Dakota want you to have active RDA registration), and some have an additional state exam you’ll need to take. New Hampshire’s pathway is complete once you finish the course, but it does gate eligibility on your history of chairside hours before you can enroll.
