FAQs
I’m relocating to North Carolina and I’m already certified in nitrous oxide monitoring in my current state. Do I need to take it again here?
Yes. North Carolina requires its own nitrous oxide monitoring certification regardless of what you’re already certified in elsewhere — this applies even if you’re an experienced assistant with current credentials from another state. It’s one of the more common surprises we see with assistants moving here, so it’s worth planning for before you start job hunting rather than after.
I have a coronal polishing certification from another state. Will that transfer when I move to NC?
No — coronal polishing works the same way as nitrous oxide monitoring here. North Carolina requires this certification to be completed in-state, no matter your prior experience or out-of-state credentials. The good news: it’s a hands-on course you can complete relatively quickly once you’re here.
I have DANB certification (or an ADA-accredited degree) — do I still need the full radiography course?
Not necessarily. If you have documented experience taking dental radiographs along with proof of certification or licensure from another state or accredited institution, you may qualify for the NC Challenge Examination instead — a faster, less expensive way to demonstrate your existing competency without retaking the full course. Worth checking your eligibility before assuming you need the full class.
Why does North Carolina require its own certification even if I’m already certified somewhere else?
Every state sets its own rules for what dental team members are legally allowed to do, and North Carolina’s requirements don’t automatically recognize certifications earned elsewhere — even from states with similar standards. It’s not a reflection of your experience or training quality; it’s simply how state-by-state dental regulation works. Our courses exist specifically to help you close that gap quickly, without redoing more than you actually need to.
I’m not relocating to North Carolina — can I still take your nitrous oxide monitoring course?
Yes. While our coronal polishing and radiography certifications are currently only available for North Carolina, our nitrous oxide monitoring certification is also licensed in South Carolina, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and North Dakota, in addition to North Carolina. If you’re practicing — or planning to practice — in one of these states, you can complete this course with us regardless of where you’re located. Please see the eligibility procedures on the page for this course.
Is Dental Staff Institute accredited?
We’re currently working toward AGD PACE approval for our hygienist and dentist-focused CE courses. We’ll update this page as soon as that status is confirmed — in the meantime, feel free to reach out if you have questions about how a specific course applies toward your CE requirements.
How long do I have access to a course after I enroll?
Access length varies by course — you’ll find the specific access period listed on each course’s page before you enroll, so you know exactly what to expect.
Who teaches DSI’s courses?
Our instructors are carefully chosen for their real-world experience and expertise in the field — and they genuinely love teaching. That combination matters: you’re learning from people who’ve actually done the work, not just studied it, which means the training you get is grounded in what really happens in a dental practice, not just theory.
How do I get my certificate after completing a course?
Your certificate is generated automatically as soon as you complete the course — no extra steps, no waiting on us to issue it manually.
I’m an employer — can I register my staff for courses?
Yes. We offer bulk licensing for employers: simply purchase the number of licenses you need and grant access to whichever employees you choose. Visit our classroom portal for more details on setting this up for your team.
Are courses fully online, or is there hands-on training too?
It depends on the course. Where a hands-on portion is required, the course runs as a hybrid — self-paced online learning combined with in-person, hands-on sessions kept to small class sizes so you get real, personal attention when it matters most.
What do I need to take an online course?
We recommend using a laptop or tablet rather than a phone, along with a reliable internet connection fast enough to stream video without interruption.
What happens if I don’t pass a certification exam — can I retake it?
For regulated courses, the passing grade is set by the state, not by us — but retakes on individual exams are available for every class, and our goal is for every student to pass. That said, missing a hands-on day, not submitting required assignments, or failing multiple exams can result in course failure. These situations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and a retake fee may apply.
Is Dental Staff Institute approved by the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners?
Yes. Our nitrous oxide monitoring and coronal polishing courses are both approved by the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners, and our radiography course is approved by both the Board and the NC Radiation Protection Section.
What’s your refund or cancellation policy?
Refund and cancellation terms are outlined on our registration site — you can review the full details there before enrolling.
Do completed courses count toward my state CE renewal requirements?
Courses marked with the AGD PACE icon count toward your continuing education requirements. Look for that icon on the course listing to confirm eligibility before enrolling.
